Sash Lock Information

Full Surround Grille Sash Lock Notch

Most window manufacturers of double hung and glider windows have sash locks. The lock is typically mounted on the inner sash and a keeper is mounted on the outer sash.

Due to the location of the keeper or sometimes the lock, the perimeter bar (surround) must be notched to fit behind the mechanism. In most cases the width of the hardware is approximately 2-1/2" and is usually mounted in the center of the sash. The keeper or lock normally is mounted with a space of approximately 1/8" between the keeper and glass.

If you are ordering grilles for double hung top sash or glider inner sash windows that have locks you will need to specify the number of locks. The second option on the grille ordering page will ask for sash lock info.

  • If you specify 1 lock for certain grilles on your order we will assume these are for upper sash double hung or inner sash glider windows and incorporate the notch shown above 2-3/4" wide and leaving 1/8" to fit behind lock.
  • If you specify 2 locks for certain grilles you will need to provide additional information in the field where you provide the day light opening size of the sash. You must input the following information: Measurement from edge of visible glass to center of lock.

Non Surround Grille Sash Lock Notch

Most window manufacturers of double hung and glider windows have sash locks. The lock is typically mounted on the inner sash and a keeper is mounted on the outer sash.

Due to the location of the keeper or sometimes the lock, and you order a pattern that has a center vertical bar, one end of the center vertical bar may need to be notched to fit behind the mechanism. In most cases a single lock is mounted in the center of the sash. Wider sizes may have two locks. If your sash has two locks and the bars fall where the keeper is you will need to inform us how many bars per grille we will need to notch.

The height of the keeper above the check rail (Dim. A) and the space between the keeper and glass (Dim. B) must be specified so that we can notch the bar similar to the image above.

If you are ordering grilles for double hung top sash or glider inner sash windows that have locks you will need to specify the number of locks in the field where you enter the size. The second option on the grille ordering page will ask for sash lock info.
