How to Measure Your Window To Accept Custom Grille Inserts

The following information will guide you through the measuring process.

Accuracy in measuring is very important as Fixhome will build your grilles based on the window dimensions you provide. Please read the following information carefully to ensure a proper fit.

Pictured below is a representation of a common window sash with a straight stile & rail profile. Fixhome offers grilles with a square end cut. If your window sash has contoured stiles & rails you may wish to specify the grille be made at a larger size and modify the grille to fit.

  • The DLO (Day Light Opening) of the sash should be measured to within the nearest 1/32" of an inch width first then height. There is a field to enter your DLO window size or OA grille size for each grille pattern located on the right side of the ordering page. (Note: If you are replacing existing grilles please provide the exact dimensions of the grilles you are replacing and please indicate size as OA (Over All). No deduction will be made from the size.
  • Grilles are manufactured 1/32" under the Day Light Opening to allow for sash and paint thickness variations.
  • The openings between the bars are called "Lights". Each grille will produce multiple lights in a window sash. (See the "Special Sizes & Patterns" section below for Non Standard Patterns)
  • There are four different fastening devices to choose from. Please be sure to select the appropriate fastener for your window. Fixhome will apply the Standard Push Pin unless another fastener is selected.
  • NOTE: For Double Hung & Slider/Glider windows make sure you have enough slideby clearance between the glass on one sash and the check rail on the other sash. (See "Check Rail Clearance" below).

 Beveling for Glazing Bead

Some windows have a glazing bead that protrudes from the sash into the daylight area leaving a bevel that will keep a grille from reaching the glass. Fixhome will bevel the back side of the grille to accomodate for this feature. Measuring an existing grille is called Over All (OA) and is usually the side facing the room. Measuring the visible glass is called Day Light Opening (DLO). If your sash has this glazing bead you will need to provide both wood to wood measurement and also visible glass so we can bevel the grille to fit your sash.

When ordering window grilles the following information should be provided:

  • DLO (Day Light Opening) or O.A. (Over All) size of each quantity ordered
  • Type of window: casement, awning, double hung, glider,  picture unit, etc.
  • Type of fastener that will best work with your type of windows

Check Rail Clearance

The following diagram is a representation of a double hung or slider window. When installing a grille in a window has two sash that slide past each other, there needs to be enough room between the surface of the glass on one sash, and the back of the rail on the other sash. This is called the "Check Rail Clearance".

In the diagram below the dimension of 9/16" indicates the minimum amount of clearance needed for a Fixhome grille to be installed without interfering with the window's operation.

Special Sizes & Patterns

If you want a grille pattern that has more lights than what is shown within the size range of your window but is shown in a larger size range, order the grille pattern shown in the larger size range and specify the Day Light Opening size of your window.

If you want a grille pattern that has less lights than what is shown within the size range of your window but is shown in a smaller size range, order the grille from the correct size range and specify your desired light pattern in the field along with your Day Light Opening size.
